At American Office Solutions, one of the most common requests we receive is clients requesting a new waste toner cartridge. However, Kyocera’s eco-friendly dual-purpose system allows you to repurpose the used black toner cartridge as the waste container. This means there is no separate waste container you need to worry about, you simply need to take your empty black toner and place it in the waste container slot.

In this guide, we’ll show you how this process works for the Kyocera TASKalfa models 2554ci, 3254ci, 3554ci, 4054ci, 5054ci, and 6054ci. Since these devices share similar hardware, the replacement process is the same for each of these models.

Changing the Toner Cartridge

First, you'll receive a notification that it’s time to replace the toner. If you're working with a Managed Print Provider, they should be monitoring your levels and have already shipped you new toner when they noticed it was running low. If you're handling copier maintenance yourself, make sure to order a new toner as soon as possible.

Now, go ahead and open the panel below the screen to access the CMYK cartridges.

After opening the door, the toner that is ready to replace will be unlocked. If it is not unlocked, it means it is not yet empty. Do not force this door open, and instead wait for the toner to run out. If you are having trouble we recommend reaching out to a Managed Print Provider for assistance.

As long as the toner is unlocked, simply remove the old cartridge and set it aside. If you are replacing the black cartridge do NOT throw it out. This is about to become your new waste container.

Grab your newly shipped toner, and place it in the now empty slot. You're all set and can begin replacing your waste toner!

Changing the Waste Container

Every time you replace the black toner on the above-mentioned TASKalfa devices, you will need to replace the waste container as well. To do that, open the waste container door located next to paper tray 1. 

Take out the current waste container and grab the empty black toner from the above section. Rotate it 180 degrees, and slide it into the waste compartment. It will click into place.

With that, you’re all ready to go! With Kyocera's dual purpose waste containers you never have to worry about having a waste container sent your way. If you replace the waste every time your black cartridge runs out you will never have to worry about having a full waste container. If you're replacing the cyan, magenta or yellow cartridges
